What is this psalm about? How does it begin and end? What words, ideas, or images repeat?
“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…” What does that repeated phrase teach us?
We often forget how dependent we are on God. Why do you think that is? What helps cultivate a genuine posture of dependence rather than just acknowledging it intellectually?
The psalm says the LORD was “on our side.” Does God choose sides? What are some of the different ways Scripture answers this question?
In what ways can we be confident in the LORD’s support, protection, defense, etc.? Is this only spiritual or can we expect God to provide physically?
Look at verses 3-5. He uses the imagery of floods to describe the things God saves us from. Do you feel like this a good picture for your difficulties? Why?
Where do you see humility in this psalm? What is the model given for how we cam cultivate genuine humility?
The psalm speaks as a community: “us,” “our,” and “let Israel now say.” Why do you think that’s important? How should that shape the way we understand ourselves as community?
